Hoffman, Ada Helen

Yesterday is gone, tomorrow may never come, all we really have is today to find love, laughter and enjoyment with those nearest and dearest to our hearts. That's why it's called the present, because every single day we live must be taken as a gift to be savoured and shared.

With a belief that the pillars of the temple are set apart for strength and the mighty oak does not grow well in the shadow of the cypress tree Ada Helen Hoffman ended her days standing strong in her own right as a wife, mother, grandmother and champion for fairness and equality, but with all her thoughts on those that she loved but never overshadowed.

After having just celebrated 63 years of marriage, Ada is survived by her loving husband Walter Hoffman of Toronto. Mother of three amazing children (known to themselves as ‘wee three’), Ada is predeceased by her daughters Susan Marie Hoffman and Catherine Jean Taylor. At her side through the remaining weeks of her life were loving granddaughters Laura and Courtney Taylor of Bowmanville and her only remaining offspring, son Alan Walter Hoffman of Cobourg supported by his wife Ann. Ada is also survived by loving grandson Karl Hoffman of Toronto and wife Wendy and Mary Dayman (nee Hoffman) and husband Andrew of Edmonton. Ada will also be mourned by her brother Art Mariano and his wife Millie of Toronto and sister Rose Lafratta of Toronto. Predeceasing her in death are her brothers Johnny Mariano and Tony Mariano and sisters Pauline Mariano and Vera Mariano.

A native of Fort William, Ontario, Ada was known in high school for a smile that would cheer everyone up on Monday morning. She was also an avid horsewoman and a card carrying member of the Manhaters Club (which no one believed).
Moving with her family to Dunbarton in 1947, Ada began a long career working with many executives and being as valued as their right hand. The most well known of these executives were Former Attorney General of Ontario The Honourable Roy McMurtry and Chair of the Liquor License Board of Ontario Andromache Kanakatsani, LLB (currently a Justice on the Supreme Court of Canada). After retiring in 1988, Ada and her husband pursued a lifelong passion for antique clocks, phonographs and gramophones.
Ada celebrated the quiet pleasures and enjoyment of all things refined.
She will be sorely missed by all who came into her sphere of influence and benefitted from her loyalty, loving nature and unwavering friendship.

Passed away peacefully at Centennial Place in Millbrook on Sunday July 12th, 2015

She was predeceased by her loving husband Gordon, and by many friends and relatives who didn’t make it to 100.
Ena leaves behind her daughter Marnie Worboy and son-in-law Ron Worboy, her daughter Adele Harrison and partner Peg Bernhardt, as well as grandchildren Adam Worboy, Martha Worboy (Matthew Fortier), Kristen Worboy and Meredith Worboy (James Kent), and great-grandchildren Kieran and George Fortier and Arabella Kent.

Ena was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to Campbell Gall and Marian Macfarlane. After the untimely death of her father in France fighting for Britain in World War I as a Captain in the Queen’s Own Scottish Highlanders, Ena and her mother emigrated to Canada, settling in The Beaches area of Toronto. Here Ena learned to play tennis, canoe and sail, and made lifelong friends. After graduating from Malvern Collegiate she attended Toronto Secretarial College, then worked for SKF Canada as assistant to the president.
Ena and Gord met at a resort on Sparrow Lake in Muskoka, where Ena was vacationing and Gord was camping nearby with some buddies. They fell in love, and were married in Toronto in 1941. Several years later they moved to Peterborough, where Ena was a stay at home mom while her daughters grew up. She volunteered extensively in the community, curled, golfed, played tennis and bridge, painted and created hand-hooked hangings of her own design. As a couple they had many dear and close friends and enjoyed a busy and fun-filled social life, both in Peterborough and at their summer cottage on Clear Lake.
After Gord’s retirement they traveled extensively to all parts of the world, had great fun with their grandchildren, and enjoyed wintering in warm climates.

Ena was well known as a beautiful woman. She was constantly kind and generous, strong physically, emotionally and morally, smart, a great hostess and creative. She was a great role model to her grandchildren, with whom she played tennis into her eighties.

Gill, Brenda Gladys

Brenda’s family is deeply saddened to announce her passing on Monday May 4th, 2015 at home after a short, but courageous, battle with cancer.

She leaves behind her beloved husband of 50 years, Kenneth; her children Belinda (Brad) and Corey (Darlene); and her grandchildren Jaime, Brandon, Cameron, Brycen and Noah. Brenda immigrated to Canada from England at the age of 3 and built a rewarding life full of loving family and friends. During her retirement years she divided her time for many years between Canada and the USA (Florida) and, in her true spirit, developed long-lasting relationships south of the border. As such, we know she will be dearly missed by her extended family and friends in the GTA, Tweed, Wilmot Creek and Poinsettia Park. The family would like to express their sincere and appreciative thanks to Dr. Forbes of Durham Region Cancer Centre, Dr. Kassirer of Newcastle Medical and the Community Care Durham nurses – she could not have been with a more caring group. Finally, the family would also like to thank all of their friends and family for the support and prayers they provided during this difficult time.

At Brenda’s request, a Private Family Service and Interment will be held. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donation made to The Cancer Society would be appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.northcuttelliott.com, with whom arrangements have been entrusted.
