Gill, Mary

Mary was born in rural Saskatchewan to Anna Klus from Poland and Michael Kowal from Eastern Ukraine. When she was 5 years old, her mother died leaving 4 children: Mary, Kathrine, John and Joseph. Mary and her 3 siblings developed a wonderful bond that lasted their lifetimes. They supported each other emotionally and took many holidays together. Later their father married Helena Romaniuk.
Mary attended Normal School in Saskatoon and became a teacher. She taught at St Joseph’s School, a two room school near Jasmin, Saskatchewan. There she met and fell in love with Robert Gill, an ambitious young man from a local farm.
Mary and Bob were married in Barrie Ontario in June of 1941. After Bob finished a short stint in the army, they started a family and began their careers as entrepreneurs par excellence. First they purchased a corner store with a gas pump and resident black bear in Chelmsford, Ontario and then moved on to’ Gill Dairy’ in Geraldton, Ontario and later, the ‘Royal Theatre’ in Bowmanville. Much later they partnered with their son Irving, in the Port Darlington Marina and Hotel in Bowmanville. For many years, Mary also worked as a teller in the Bowmanville CIBC. She was known for her precision with numbers and diligence. Mary and Bob worked hard but took time to see the world. They took several cruises and also traveled to Europe, China, Cuba and Australia. A home in Florida provided a retreat from their busy lives. They eventually retired in Newcastle Ontario.
Mary was an astute business woman and very creative in all the family businesses. She was an active member of the Bowmanville Business and Professional Women’s Club. She also was an excellent bridge player.
Mary had unlimited energy and enthusiasm and took tap dancing lessons with her daughters and learned to play the Hawaiian guitar and saxophone. And who will ever forget her license, “Big Wig”?
Mary spent her last years in Strathaven Care Centre where she loved to have family and friends visit.
Mary was predeceased by the love of her life, Bob, in 1998 after 57 years of marriage. Her dear sister Kae Lang and brother Joe Kowal died in 2005 and 2012 respectively. Her grandson Jeff Martin died in 2004. Her brother John died a mere week ago.
Mary is survived by her children Irv (Mary Lou Marr), Dixie (Robert Jones), and Pat (Derek Martin). Her sister in law, Anne, lives in Richmond BC. She also leaves behind, 9 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren and 4 Great Great Grandchildren all of whom she was immensely proud. She was ‘Aunt Mary’ to many nieces and nephews on Vancouver Island and B.C. mainland, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario and Virginia. Her cats, Simba and Susie were special to her.
Mary’s children would like to thank Carrie Gill, Ron Shields, Audrey Steven, Dr Kassirer and the staff of Strathaven Care Centre for their care and kindness to their mother.

Mary will be cremated and her ashes will be buried alongside Bob’s ashes at St George’s Cemetery. A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date. If desired, Memorial Donations may be made to the Salvation Army, through NORTHCUTT ELLIOTT FUNERAL HOME, 53 Division Street North, Bowmanville, with whom the arrangements have been entrusted.

McLeod, Overton Amar

April 26, 1996 - September 22, 2014

Our beloved Ovie came into this world and blessed us with 18 years full of beautiful smiles, funny jokes, random lyrics and dance moves. Overton was naturally charming, without saying a word. Any goal he ever put his mind to, would be accomplished with ease. He truly was the amazing and wonderful young man we all knew and loved.

There are no known words to describe the void created by the loss of Overton’s physical presence here in the physical world, but his forever loving parents, Omar & Amanda, and his ever loving family and friends know that it is only a matter of time before their souls reunite. Until then, may we find peace in our faith and belief that our Ovie continues to remain with us in spirit, watching over us, and there to comfort us whenever we call.

Prout, Cynthia Blanche

(nee Atkins)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Cynthia Prout at the Bowmanville Hospital on Saturday July 19th, 2014 at the age of 77. Cynthia is survived by her beloved husband Luke, her children Martha Hendrikx (the late Mark), Adam Hickey (Victoria) and her step children Kim Prout (Laurie) and Donnie and Randy Prout. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Marissa, David (Kendra), Daniel, Rebecca and Vincent Hendrikx; Tyler and Oliver Hickey; Kym Prout and Hunter Sol Prout. Terribly missed by her 4 legged family of cats and dogs. Remembered fondly by the Hickey family, the Hannah family, Pierrette Godin, the Burnett family and her large A.A. family.
Cynthia was born in Bangalore, India just before WWII, where her father was stationed with the British Army. She came to Canada when she was 11 years old, settling in Toronto, then marrying and having children in the Brampton area. When her children were little she moved up to the Yukon for a few years, before settling in Clarington, Ontario where she met the love of her life, Luke. Having worked her whole life she went back to night school to get her degree at McMaster in Addictions and Mental Health, then used that to help start and later become, the Director of Destiny Manor, a drug and alcohol rehab centre for women.
Six years ago, Cynthia’s life was changed forever with a car accident when the other driver was on her cell phone, ran 2 red lights and smashed into Luke and Cynthia. Cynthia suffered brain damage and suffered slowly for 6 years, then very rapidly for the past few months. Despite this, Cynthia remained a loyal and loving friend and family member. She was to have celebrated her 37th A.A. anniversary this coming December, an accomplishment she was extremely proud of.
Thanks to the amazing Dr. Albert, Dr. John Rundle and the nurses on the 2nd floor of Bowmanville Hospital. Cynthia was treated with nothing other than respect, dignity and love during her stay. We very much appreciate all they did for her and us, during these final 2 weeks.

Words of Wisdom

“Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.”

- Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

Many co-workers and colleagues that Cathy touched during her 35-year career at Ernst & Young on Bay Street will feel her loss as well as the numerous friends she made in the equestrian community as she pursued her life-long love of horses and all four-legged creatures. While all those Cathy gave her unique gift of caring, compassion and support are too many to mention, of special note is family friend and her "adopted son" Florian Rrjoli. Cathy's boss at Ernst & Young, Chief Financial Officer and Partner Alan Smith summed up the way many people feel with these words: "Cathy, if I close my eyes, I can picture back in time 20 years ago and see you smiling and telling me about the girls and about the horses. You were always such a positive person and I'm sure you have relied on that to give you strength and courage these many years"
